The United States Men’s hockey team has found their bench boss for the upcoming World Hockey Championship. San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn will man the red, white, and blue bench as he was announced as its head coach, Daily Faceoff first reported Wednesday.
They will hold the World Hockey Championship from May 12-28 in Finland and Latvia.
This will be Quinn’s second time manning the USA men’s team after he coached in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The United States dominated their preliminary round, including wins over China, Canada and Germany. The United States would fall to Slovakia in a shootout during the quarterfinal, 3-2, once again sticking a knife into the United States’ medal hopes.
USA general manager Chris Clark made comments on Quinn coming back to coach the stars and stripes this May.
“It’s great to have David coaching our team again this year,” Clark said. “He knows the player pool extremely well and understands the dynamics involved in preparing a team to win a gold medal on the world stage.” (Full quotes via Daily Faceoff.)
The United States has struggled in past international World Championships. They haven’t won a gold medal since 1960. Hopefully, they can turn around their gold medal hopes in this year’s World Championship with Quinn in charge again.
Quinn will look to take his eyesight to the United States men’s team in May, as the Sharks will not be making the playoffs. Currently, the San Jose Sharks and Quinn have the second-fewest points in the league standings, ahead of only the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Sharks were eliminated from playoff contention with an overtime loss to the Blue Jackets on March 14th.
Hopefully, Quinn and the United States can bring back home the gold this May after recent struggles in the past.
